Planting Seeds International Community Center

In 2017, Planting Seeds extended its reach beyond preschool to offer youth and family-centered educational programming in Zone 3 in Guatemala City. Zone 3 is home to one of the largest garbage repositories in Central America where most families earn their income by rummaging through the garbage to collect and resell recyclables.

Through our community investigation we learned that although there are roughly 72,000 people in Zone 3, there are no organizational resources open to families after 5pm. The lack of open spaces and resources leaves children, youth, and adults extremely susceptible to the dangers in the community, especially after dark, when violence is most likely to occur. Additionally the Planting Seeds’ family programming currently can only take place once a week due to the limitations of rented spaces. With an open community center, we will be able to provide structured and unstructured programming at all times of day, significantly expanding our reach within the community.

Budgeted Costs:   $29,710
